Founded in 1895, the Venice Biennale is one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in the world. Originally conceived as an art exhibition, it now also comprises events dedicated to architecture, music, cinema and theatre.
Held every other year between the months of May and November, the Art Biennale is spread across two venues in Venice, the Arsenale and the Giardini. It is formulated of the Central Pavilion and 29 National Pavilions, each presenting its own showcase of art. A new Biennale curator is selected each year who produces an additional international exhibition and series of associated events.
The Art Biennale is a significant event in the art world calendar and today attracts over 500,000 visitors. There are three Pavilions from the UK – the British Pavilion, Scotland + Venice and Wales in Venice. Recent artist representatives have included Tracey Emin, Graham Fagen, Sarah Lucas and Helen Sear.
