Noble and Webster and ‘chiaroscuro’
Published three times a year in French and English, each issue of Cartier Art explores an editorial theme or concept. The latest issue looks at light and how it has been mastered through the ages by artists and designers.
Cartier licensed an image of Tim Noble and Sue Webster’s Wild Mood Swings, 2009–2010 (pictured below), which appears alongside Hélène Kelmachter’s article, ‘Shadow, or In Praise of Light’.
Taking in the history of painting, Kelmachter explores the concept of ‘chiaroscuro’ and how representations of light and shadow are intimately bound up with our perception of reality.
In a section on contemporary art, she looks at Noble and Webster’s shadow sculptures. Made from scraps of reclaimed wood and metal, the sculptures take form when their shadow is cast on a wall by a bright, projected light. Revealing two figures, the light creates an illusion, rather than reality.
Cartier Art is available in print form in-store at Cartier’s boutiques. A digital version is also available to download for iPad and iPhone. Find out more.
