Drawing on east London’s history of weaving and textile design
Made from ferns and plants, the living artwork recognises a long history of diverse migrant communities settling and blossoming in London’s east end, from the 18th century Huguenots to 21st century sari shops and textile manufacturers.
Anya Gallaccio's design for the artwork draws on an 18th century pattern on silk by Anna Maria Garthwaite. Her celebrated textile designs demonstrated a profound understanding of the technical process of silk weaving and a skilful and naturalistic rendering of flowers and plants.
Gallaccio uses ephemeral and organic materials in her work, meaning it is rarely permanent. This commission follows on from previous artworks, including 1999's Glaschu – a low-lying carpet of grass and other small plants laid out in a formal pattern in the grand Victorian hall of Lanarkshire House, Glasgow.
This new commission will open to the public during events at DACS from 19 April 2016 onwards. The events are part of DACS Foundation's on-going programme of artist talks and panel discussions.
