The exhibition
A show for the ages, this exhibition sees Gilbert & George pieces span across all four of White Cube’s galleries, including THE BEARD PICTURES and THE FUCKOSOPHY, a collection of nearly 4000 pronouncements and mottoes created by the artists.
Since meeting in 1967 at St Martins School of Art, Gilbert & George have used their art to discuss social issues, taboos and artistic conventions. Well known for their trademark grid aesthetic, broken and distorted in collective squares, yet unified with signs and overarching imagery, their work is all the while underpinned by their joint ethos: ‘Art for all’.
The two artists are also to be met in conversation by writer, novelist and cultural commentator Michael Bracewell on 28 November 2017 at 6:30pm at Hoxton Hall, London. More information here.
New Gilbert & George Foundation to open in 2019
Gilbert & George were among the first contemporary artists to move to Spitalfields in London’s East End in the 1960s, and they have lived and worked there ever since. As George says: “Nothing happens in the world that doesn’t happen in the East End”. Breakfasting for years at the same café, the East End has been the inspiration behind some of their most famous artworks. The duo has now decided to pay homage to the area and have embarked upon the creation of a non-profit foundation for contemporary art, The Gilbert & George Centre.
The foundation will be based in a house the artists bought last year on Heneage Street, an establishment once owned by artist Polly Hope and dating back to the 1830s, when it knew itself as a brewery. The conversion will turn the spacious spot into a non-profit gallery and foundation for contemporary arts, with two exhibitions a year. We can’t wait!
