A Line Made by Walking
Richard Long first made his name in the contemporary art world in 1967, when, while studying at Central Saint-Martins, he created the groundbreaking A Line Made by Walking; a photograph of a straight track that he had created by walking back and forth through grass. Blurring performance and artwork, while showing an abundant respect for nature, would become Long’s motif, even after his work developed throughout his career.
A Line Made by Walking was considered a thematic milestone in contemporary art, and all of Long’s artworks in the 1960s were connected with the beginnings of Land Art, Conceptual Art and Arte Povera (‘poor art’, categorised by its movement away from traditional artistic materials such as oil paint, canvas and marble).
Long has created artworks in remote regions across Britain as well as over the world, and his works tend to be identified with lines, circles, rituals and always natural materials, before then being photographed or documented in words.
The Exhibition
The exhibition, Artist Rooms – Richard Long: Drawn from the Land (2 December 2017 – 4 March 2018) is held at Derby Museum and Gallery, set against the backfrop of Derby and the Peak District, and draws on works from the national ARTIST ROOMS collection. The ARTIST ROOMS collection holds works by 40 major artists and displays them in solo shows across the UK.
